Dr. Gown is a pathologist-scientist recognized as one of the world’s leading experts in the diagnostic and research applications of immunohistochemistry (IHC). He has developed numerous clinically important monoclonal antibodies used around the world (e.g., HMB-45, 34βE12, HHF35, OSCAR), and continues to be at the forefront of clinical investigative studies employing IHC and other modalities, publishing widely and presenting at national and international conferences. Dr. Gown is a member of the editorial boards of many of the major pathology journals. He is a Clinical Professor of Pathology at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, and an Affiliate Investigator in the Clinical Research Division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, WA. Dr. Gown has contributed extensively to the expanding horizons of immunohistochemistry with over 200 peer-reviewed publications.

Lynn Goldstein, M.D.

Dr. Goldstein directs the Contract Research Department, assisting investigators in the academic, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical communities in customizing clinical research studies, and helps implement internal research and development of new tests for improved clinical diagnosis and patient management. Dr. Goldstein is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with a special interest in cytopathology. She received her M.D. from Boston University and is a graduate of the University of Washington Pathology Training Program. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Goldstein has 20 years of experience in clinical positions in anatomic pathology and has held senior research positions at Genetic Systems Corporation, Oncogen, and ICOS Corporation. During this time, she was responsible for developing one of the first assays for the detection of human immunodeficiency virus. She has developed numerous monoclonal antibodies currently used in testing for infectious diseases (including herpes viruses) and has published extensively in this field.

Patricia Kandalaft, M.D.

Dr. Kandalaft has extensive experience as a pathologist, with particular expertise in immunohistochemistry. She is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. She received her M.D. from the University of Missouri School of Medicine, and completed her postgraduate training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Michigan Medical Center and the Northwestern affiliate, Evanston Hospital. Following her residency, she completed a two-year Surgical Pathology Fellowship at the City of Hope National Medical Center under the guidance of Dr. Hector Battifora. Prior to joining PhenoPath, Dr. Kandalaft worked for 10 years in large hospital-based practices in Los Angeles, and most recently at Esoterix Laboratories in Nashville, Tennessee, where she specialized in diagnostic immunohistochemistry.

Steven J. Kussick, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Kussick has extensive experience in the use of morphologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular methods in the diagnosis of hematolymphoid neoplasms. He is board-certified in Anatomic Pathology and Hematopathology. Dr. Kussick received his M.Sc. in Medical Statistics from the London (England) School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where he studied as a George C. Marshall Scholar. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. from the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Washington, where he also completed his Anatomic Pathology Residency and Hematopathology Fellowship. Prior to joining PhenoPath, Dr. Kussick worked for seven years as an Attending Hematopathologist and the Associate Director of Hematopathology in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Washington. Dr. Kussick has a broad research background, with over 25 peer-reviewed research publications in areas including flow cytometry, hematopathology, basic cancer biology, and chronic disease epidemiology.

Harry Hwang, M.D.

Dr. Hwang is the Director of Molecular Pathology and he directs the FISH and PCR services as well as participating in immunohistochemistry (IHC) studies of solid tumor and hematopathology cases. Dr. Hwang brings to PhenoPath the combined strengths of extensive diagnostic pathology experience, coupled with intensive knowledge of molecular pathology. He is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Dr. Hwang received his Bachelor of Sciences degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Upon graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, he completed his AP/CP residency training at the University of Washington Medical Center, where he trained under Dr. Gown, who was Professor of Pathology at that time. Dr. Hwang then held the position of Senior Fellow, followed by Research Associate, at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) in Seattle. Dr. Hwang completed a one year IHC Fellowship at PhenoPath in 2002-3, and served as an Adjunct Pathologist prior to his full-time appointment as Director of Molecular Pathology in 2008. Following his IHC Fellowship, he resumed his research career as an Associate in Clinical Research in Dr. Bruce Clurman’s lab at the FHCRC, where he was instrumental in identifying cancer genes that collaborate with the p27 protein, which appears in abnormally low levels in lymphomas, breast, and other carcinomas.

Christopher Tse, MBBS

Dr. Tse is a senior pathologist who has exceptional expertise in the reading and interpretation of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) studies. In that capacity, Dr. Tse works closely with Dr. Steven Kussick and Dr. Harry Hwang in PhenoPath’s Molecular Pathology Laboratory, participating in the development and validation of new clinical FISH assays. Dr. Tse received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from the University of Hong Kong, and underwent extensive postgraduate training in pathology at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Hong Kong; Princess Margaret Hospital, Hong Kong; Royal Marsden Hospital, London; Royal Free Hospital, London; St. Mark’s Hospital, London; and the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, UK. He also trained in neuropathology at the Institute of Neurological Sciences, Glasgow, UK. Dr. Tse also completed an Immunohistochemistry Fellowship at PhenoPath Laboratories in 2004-5. Prior to joining PhenoPath, Dr. Tse was the Chief of the Pathology Service at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong for ten years. Dr. Tse has published extensively in various areas of diagnostic pathology, including hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma, as well as other solid tumors.

Hugh E. Tobin, M.D.

Hugh E. Tobin, MD, has been with PhenoPath Laboratories since October 2008. Dr. Tobin’s responsibilities involve the entire range of PhenoPath diagnostic hematopathology testing, including immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, FISH, and PCR. In addition, Dr. Tobin serves on the PhenoPath Board and Operations Committees, utilizing his management expertise to continue to expand upon PhenoPath’s national reputation of excellence and quality.
Dr. Tobin has extensive experience in the use of morphologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular methods in the diagnosis of hematolymphoid neoplasms. He is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Hematopathology, and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine. Dr. Tobin received his MD from the Baylor College of Medicine and completed his AP and CP residency at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center, followed by the Advanced Officer Course at the US Army Medical Corp. Most recently, Dr. Tobin completed the two-year Owner President Management Program at the Harvard Business School.
Dr. Tobin has held many posts throughout his career, including, but not limited to, Chief of Department, 34th General US Army Hospital, Augsburg, Germany; Medical Director of Blood Bank, Walter Reed Army Medical Center; Medical Director of Blood Bank/Critical Care Lab, Flow Cytometry, Pathology Associates of St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville; Owner, and Director of Blood Bank and Hematology, Pathology Associates of San Antonio, TX.

Sara Duesterhoeft, M.D.

PhenoPath Laboratories is pleased to announce the January 1, 2010 appointment of Dr. Sara M. Duesterhoeft as a Pathologist and Associate Director of Hematopathology. Dr. Duesterhoeft’s duties involve the entire range of PhenoPath diagnostic hematopathology testing, including immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, FISH, and PCR. Dr. Duesterhoeft attended the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities Medical School where she earned her M.D. She completed her residency in Anatomic Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Washington Medical Center. Following her residency, she fulfilled a Fellowship in Pediatric Pathology at Seattle Children’s Hospital/University of Washington Medical Center, and a Fellowship in Hematopathology at the University of Washington Medical Center/Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Dr. Duesterhoeft is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, as well as Hematopathology.
