ACGME-accredited IHC FELLOWSHIP
Download the Fellowship Brochure.
PhenoPath offers an ACGME-accredited fellowship in immunohistochemistry and is currently accepting applications for the 2009-2010 position, commencing July 1, 2009.
PhenoPath Laboratories is a state-of-the-art reference pathology laboratory providing diagnostic immunohistochemistry (IHC), in situ hybridization (ISH), flow cytometry, and other molecular pathology services to pathologists throughout the United States. This busy consultation service handles a wide variety of clinical problems in general surgical pathology and hematopathology. The most commonly addressed issues include breast cancer marker studies, carcinomas of unknown primary, confirmation and subclassification of lymphomas, characterization of undifferentiated malignant neoplasms, identification of viruses, and distinction of mesothelioma from adenocarcinoma.
The Fellow will have exposure to a broad range of techniques including IHC, ISH, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and flow cytometry. As part of the Fellowship training program, there are weekly didactic sessions and journal clubs presented by Dr. Gown, other PhenoPath pathologists and guest speakers. The Fellow is responsible for evaluating incoming cases, determining the panel of antibodies to be employed, and participating in case sign-out. The day begins with an early morning "problem case conference," in which difficult cases from the previous day are reviewed by all pathologists on a multihead microscope. There are two daily case sign-outs, which occur on multiheaded microscopes, in which pathologists, technologists, and the Fellow all participate. Given the unusual nature of many of the cases, extensive use of textbooks, journal articles in the on-site library, and Medline searches are often required in the course of case workups. Numerous opportunities exist for participation in a wide variety of clinical research projects. It is anticipated that the Fellow will be involved in submitting abstracts to scientific meetings (e.g., USCAP) and papers to peer-reviewed journals.
At the conclusion of the training program, the Fellow will function near the level of a staff pathologist, and have achieved the following:
- Management of highly complicated cases where expertise in both H&E and IHC-based work-ups are required
- Knowledge in the utility of ancillary techniques to aid in guiding targeted therapies for breast, colorectal and other cancers
- Detailed knowledge of the technical issues of lab methods including IHC, FISH, flow cytometry, and PCR
- Ability to design, interpret and write-up research studies culminating in peer-reviewed publications
